From Moi International Airport, Mombasa
Most international and domestic arrivals land at Moi International Airport on Mombasa Island. From there the journey continues south by road to Diani. It is the most common arrival route and the one private transfers are built around.
From the SGR terminus
Travellers coming from Nairobi by the standard gauge railway arrive at the Mombasa terminus outside the city, then continue south by road. Because train arrival times are fixed, this is the easiest arrival to coordinate a transfer around — the driver simply meets the train.
Flying directly to Ukunda (Diani Airport)
There is a domestic airstrip at Ukunda, immediately inland from Diani Beach. Arriving here removes the Mombasa road leg entirely and leaves only a short transfer to your accommodation, which is why some travellers connect onto it.
The Likoni Ferry and the bypass
The traditional route between Mombasa Island and the south coast is the Likoni Ferry, which carries vehicles and foot passengers across the channel. It is part of daily coastal life and features in the Mombasa Old Town day tour.
Queues at the ferry vary through the day, which is the single biggest source of unpredictability on this journey. The Dongo Kundu bypass road provides an alternative route between the south coast and the Mombasa area that avoids the ferry crossing. Which route your driver takes depends on conditions on the day.
Why arrival timing matters
- Give your arrival day room. Ferry queues and traffic make exact arrival times hard to promise.
- Do not book a full-day excursion for the day you land or the day you leave.
- Share your flight or train details when you arrange the transfer so pickup is timed to the actual arrival, not a guess.
- Departure transfers should be planned backwards from check-in time, allowing for the route.
How Diani Tribe handles transfers
Private transfers are one of the four things we coordinate, alongside villa stays, curated experiences and day-to-day trip planning. Arranging them through the same local team that holds your itinerary means arrival, departure and activity pickups are timed against each other rather than booked in isolation.
